Questions to ask your insurer (QLD)
These questions are designed to produce clear written answers — so you’re not guessing during a claim.
Copy/paste checklist (email your insurer)
- Can you confirm in writing what cover applies during building works at [address]?
- Does my existing home/buildings policy remain valid during renovations? What exclusions apply?
- Do you require special “renovation” endorsements or separate policies during works?
- What does the policy exclude relating to structural changes, unoccupied periods, scaffolding, or site access?
- What’s the correct insured value for works-in-progress and stored materials?
- What public liability limits do you recommend (and what is excluded)?
- Do subcontractors need to carry their own liability and workers cover? What evidence do you want?
- How are storm, flood, theft, vandalism and accidental damage handled during construction?
- Do you require particular security/temporary fencing/site rules?
- What changes do I need to notify you about (timeline changes, owner occupancy, stage changes)?
Key tip
Ask for written confirmation. If you only have a phone call, write back summarising what you were told and ask them to confirm.
