SA Guide
SA: Completion & occupation approval
What “completion” means in practice: final inspections, evidence packs, and the documents typically needed before lawful occupation.
Requirements vary by project. Your building surveyor/certifier is the best source for what’s required for your final sign-off.
Quick links
In 60 seconds
- “Done” means the final inspection is passed and the required paperwork is in.
- Most delays at the end happen because documents are missing, not because the house is unfinished.
- Start building your evidence pack early (it’s painful to rebuild later).
Completion checklist (practical)
- Confirm the final inspection list with your building surveyor/certifier (what must be complete and visible).
- Finish all “must-have” items that block sign-off (safety, services, required fixtures).
- Collect trade certificates (electrical, plumbing/drainage, and any others relevant to your project).
- Collect engineering / specialist sign-offs if applicable (structural, truss, retaining, etc.).
- Prepare as-built documentation if needed (changes made during construction).
- Book the final inspection early (end-of-build schedules fill fast).
- Rectify defects identified at final inspection and provide proof.
- Receive the final outcome (whatever your project’s completion/occupation documentation is).
