VIC Guide

VIC: Questions to ask your insurer

Use this list to avoid nasty surprises — especially for renovations and “existing structures”.

Contract Works (ask)

  • What exactly is covered: materials on site, partially completed work, theft?
  • Storm/water damage coverage while the building is “open”?
  • Any exclusions for faulty workmanship / design defects?
  • Do you require specific site security measures?
  • How do you calculate payout: reinstatement vs agreed value?

Public Liability (ask)

  • What’s the limit and what’s excluded?
  • Is volunteer labour covered (friends/family helping)?
  • Are subcontractors required to have their own PL too?
  • Any restrictions for demolition, excavation, or high-risk work?

Existing structures / renovations (ask)

  • Is the existing home covered while works are underway?
  • Does my current home policy remain valid during construction?
  • What cover do you offer if the existing structure is partially occupied?
  • What happens if a burst pipe / fire impacts the existing home during works?
Tip: ask for answers in writing (email is fine).

Claims & admin (ask)

  • What evidence do you need for a claim (photos, invoices, police report)?
  • Are you okay with staged variations during the project?
  • Do you require updated sums insured as the build progresses?
  • What are the key “must disclose” facts that could void a claim?
